Tank! Aquarium Tracker™ User Guide

Custom Dosing Products

Create a local product rule when a built-in generic template does not match the product you want to record. Enter the relevant details from the product's own label.

Creating and editing Custom Dosing Products is planned as a Tank! Plus feature for the Tank! 1.0 App Store release and is not yet publicly available for purchase.

Open the Custom Product editor

Use any entry point that fits what you are doing:

Enter the required product and label-rule details, then choose Save. Editing an existing product uses Save Changes. The editor's Custom Product Help link opens this guide. Default and custom product changes stay local to the device.

Product Name

Product Name is your identifying name for the saved product. It can use the label name you recognize and is shown later in Dosing Products and the Dosing Calculator. Tank! does not recommend a brand or manufacturer.

What Kind of Product?

The editor asks What kind of product is this? The available Product Kind choices are:

  • Water Conditioner / Dechlorinator
  • Ammonia Remover Or Binder
  • pH Up
  • pH Down
  • KH / Alkalinity Up
  • GH Up
  • Aquarium Salt / Salt Mix
  • Fertilizer / Plant Nutrient
  • Calcium / Magnesium / Reef Additive
  • Medicine
  • Algae Remover
  • Bacteria Supplement
  • Other

Product Kind records the category you select for organizing the product rule and changes or filters the available Affected Parameter choices. It does not verify the product’s identity, ingredients, intended use, suitability, or safety, and it is not a recommendation.

Affected Parameter

Affected Parameter records the parameter that you associate with the product rule. Most Product Kinds show one purpose-specific parameter. Calcium / Magnesium / Reef Additive can use GH / General Hardness, Salinity, or Water Conditioning. Other can use Water Conditioning, pH, KH / Alkalinity, GH / General Hardness, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, or Salinity.

Fertilizer / Plant Nutrient shows an intentionally short implemented list: Select Parameter, Nitrate, Phosphate / PO4, Potassium / K, Iron / Fe, General Plant Nutrients, and Other / Custom Parameter. For Other / Custom Parameter, enter Parameter Name, optionally enter Symbol / Abbreviation (Optional), and choose Unit: None, ppm, or Custom. Choosing Custom reveals another Unit field for your label's unit text.

Neutral field example

Product Kind: Fertilizer / Plant Nutrient
Affected Parameter: Iron / Fe
Unit: ppm

Enter only the dose-rule values printed on your own product label. This example organizes fields; it does not provide a dose, target, schedule, brand, recommendation, or safety judgment.

Fixed Dose By Tank Volume

Choose Basis: Per Volume when the product label gives an amount based only on water volume. Enter a positive Dose Amount, choose a Dose Unit, enter a positive Volume Basis, and choose the volume unit, gal or L.

The Dosing Calculator arithmetically scales that user-configured label rule to the selected dosing volume. Current and target parameter values are not used for this basis. The result is an estimate based on the information you entered. Tank! does not determine that the amount is appropriate or safe and does not perform density conversions between dose units.

Parameter-Change Dose

Choose Basis: Per Unit Delta Per Volume only when the product label gives an amount per water volume for each measured change. The rule uses Affected Parameter, Intent / Direction, Dose Amount, Dose Unit, Volume Basis, its volume unit, and a positive Parameter Change Per Dose. The parameter's displayed unit comes from the selected parameter or the custom unit you entered.

In the Dosing Calculator, enter Current and Target values. Tank! calculates from their difference, the selected dosing volume, and your configured product-label rule. A Raise rule requires a target above the current value; a Lower rule requires a target below it. Equal values, wrong-direction values, incomplete rules, and non-positive inputs are rejected. Tank! does not choose a target.

The result is an arithmetic estimate based on user-entered values and is not a recommendation to use the entered target or apply the calculated amount.

Product Rule Fields

Product Name
Required. Enter the identifying product name you want to see in Dosing Products and the Dosing Calculator.
What kind of product is this?
Required selection. Describes the Product Kind and controls the available Affected Parameter choices.
Affected Parameter
Required for a measured-change rule and required for Fertilizer / Plant Nutrient. The available values depend on Product Kind.
Parameter Name
Required only when Fertilizer / Plant Nutrient uses Other / Custom Parameter.
Symbol / Abbreviation (Optional)
Optional for a fertilizer Other / Custom Parameter. It appears with the saved custom parameter name where that context is displayed.
Unit
For fertilizer parameters, choose None, ppm, or Custom. A custom unit text is required for a measured-change rule.
Physical Form
Choose Liquid, Powder, Tablet/Capsule, or Other/Manual. A new rule defaults the Dose Unit from this choice until you explicitly change the Dose Unit.
Intent / Direction
Choose Raise, Lower, or Condition. Product Kind supplies the starting direction; changing Product Kind resets it to that kind's default.
Basis
Choose Per Volume or Per Unit Delta Per Volume. The latter reveals Parameter Change Per Dose and only supports parameters with measured-change calculations.
Dose Amount
Required and greater than zero. Enter the amount from the product label.
Dose Unit
Required selection: mL, g, tsp, tbsp, or capfuls.
Volume Basis
Required and greater than zero. This is the reference water volume from the label; choose gal or L as its volume unit.
Parameter Change Per Dose
Required and greater than zero only for Per Unit Delta Per Volume. It records the measured change represented by the configured dose and volume basis.
Equivalent label (Optional)
Optional product-label wording stored for display.
Optional Label Context
For non-fertilizer products, Label Effect, Effect Direction, Effect Amount (Optional), Effect Unit, and any custom labels are stored for display only; they are not used for unit conversion or calculator math.
Notes / Warnings
Optional user-entered label instructions, cautions, handling notes, or personal reference notes.
Add a matching custom test field for this tank
Optional when the editor is opened with a tank and that Product Kind supports a matching custom field. Tank! does not add a duplicate for a standard reading or an existing active match.

The current Custom Dosing Product editor does not show a saved enabled/disabled field. Guided Setup's Disable All And Setup Later action clears the products selected in that setup flow; it is not a product-level enabled switch.

Notes / Warnings

You can save product-label instructions, product cautions, handling notes, and personal reference notes. This text is entered by you. Tank! does not verify, interpret, approve, or endorse it, and does not monitor whether it is followed.

Continue to follow the product’s current official label and manufacturer instructions. Do not use saved notes to override those instructions. Saved notes do not replace appropriate professional advice where such advice is needed.

Saving and Validation

Product Name, Dose Amount, and Volume Basis are required. Dose Amount and Volume Basis must be greater than zero. Per Unit Delta Per Volume also requires a supported Affected Parameter and a Parameter Change Per Dose greater than zero. Fertilizer / Plant Nutrient requires an Affected Parameter; Other / Custom Parameter requires Parameter Name, and a custom unit is required when that parameter is used for a measured-change rule.

If saving fails, the editor shows Could Not Save Product with a field-specific reason. An incomplete rule cannot be used to calculate because the Dosing Calculator requires valid positive rule values and any required current and target values.

These validation checks confirm that required supported fields and positive values are present. They do not verify the product label, product suitability, target selection, dose safety, compatibility, or expected outcome.

Changing Product Kind preserves the current Affected Parameter only when it remains available; otherwise the editor selects the new kind's relevant parameter. It also resets Intent / Direction to the kind's default and clears fertilizer-only parameter details when moving away from Fertilizer / Plant Nutrient. Selecting Per Unit Delta Per Volume with an unsupported kind changes Product Kind to pH Up. Changing a fertilizer Affected Parameter clears its prior effect amount and custom parameter text when those fields no longer apply.

Using in Dosing Calculator

  1. Open the intended tank's Dosing Calculator and verify the selected product. The screen normally begins with Water Conditioner unless it was opened with a specific product.
  2. Select your configured Custom Dosing Product.
  3. Under Water Volume, choose Saved tank volume, Custom volume, or Water volume buffer, then review the displayed calculation basis.
  4. For a measured-change rule, enter Current and Target values.
  5. Choose Calculate Dose Estimate and review the descriptive Dose Estimate. It depends on your selected product rule, dosing volume, and any required values.
  6. Choose Log as Applied only after you actually apply the amount and want to save it in Dose History.

Opening Dosing Calculator or calculating an estimate does not log a dose. An incomplete rule cannot calculate.

Guided Setup

At Guided Setup's Dosing step, built-in and existing Custom Dosing Products appear under Select Products with none selected initially. Select only products you use or want to track. You can continue with none selected. Selecting a product only adds it to the setup workflow; it does not mean that Tank! recommends, approves, or verifies the product.

Only selected products move to Configure Selected; unselected defaults are not saved or changed. Add Dosing Product creates a Custom Dosing Product with the same editor and selects the saved product. If selected products still need meaningful nonzero rules, Setup Now returns to configuration, Disable All And Setup Later clears the setup selection and moves on, and Go Back returns to selection. Clearing the setup selection does not remove the saved global product record from Dosing Products or the calculator catalog.

Existing Products and History

Edit an existing Custom Dosing Product from Dosing Products or with Edit Selected in Dosing Calculator. If Product Kind or Affected Parameter changes, future calculations use the saved updated rule and the editor applies the compatibility behavior described above.

Log as Applied creates a separate Dose History record with the product name and calculation context. For a measured-change custom parameter, the logged note includes its name, symbol, unit, and current-to-target transition. For a custom product, the record also saves a snapshot of the current Notes / Warnings text. Later edits to the product do not rewrite those already-saved history fields or warning-note snapshots. The current product editor does not provide product-level disable and re-enable controls.

A snapshot preserves the user-entered text for historical reference; it does not verify or endorse that text.

Important Boundaries

Tank! does not recommend, endorse, or select products; choose target values or schedules; or determine whether a product, rule, target, calculated amount, or application is appropriate or safe for a particular aquarium. You configure product rules from your own product label, and all estimates depend on the accuracy and applicability of the information you enter. Tank! provides recordkeeping and arithmetic calculation tools only. It does not provide diagnosis, treatment, prescription, emergency advice, or guarantees of water quality, aquarium safety, treatment results, or livestock outcomes.
